My best friend of 25 years was turning 30 and I wanted to make her a cake she would never forget. She LOVES Pabst Blue Ribbon beer (so much so that she has a tattoo of the beer can on her leg). I knew that would be the best cake for her.
I started with two chocolate cake mixes from the store. I baked two separate cakes in a 9×13 glass pan and let them cool overnight. Then I frosted them (the next day) with store bought butter cream frosting. I then used plain white fondant from Wilton. I kneaded in some clear vanilla before I rolled it out so that it would taste good when people ate it. After I rolled it out I laid it over the cake (I made sure to roll it over sized so I could form it around the cake) then trimmed it with a pizza cutter. Then I cut the Blue Ribbon out of pre-dyed blue fondant and the red stripe out of pre-dyed red fondant. I had silver baking “dust” that I mixed with clear vanilla and a drop or two of black food coloring. I then painted that on the bottom and top to give it that can look.
I then took a piece of extra fondant and made a “pop-top” to put on the top of the can. I painted that silver too. Lastly, I rolled up a piece of fondant and painted it silver and put it around the top like the lip of the can. Once everything was placed on the cake my sister hand piped the “Pabst Blue Ribbon” on the cake.
It was a hit and when it came time to cut the cake, no one wanted to destroy it. Ever since that birthday (almost 3 years ago) I have had request after request for birthday cakes.
