Coolest Pirate Ship and Treasure Cake

The main Pirate Ship and Treasure Cake is made from a Wilton shaped football cake pan combined with various cuts off a rectangular shaped cake. I cut the football cake in half and stuck it together to make the black base of the ship. It originally had more curved ends but due to some load bearing issues I had to straighten out the base with some additional chunks of cake for support. I used an orange pound cake recipe and stuck it all together with apricot jam. I stuck some skewers through the cake to try to hold it in place. The treasure chest is a small loaf pan.

I cut the top off, just rested it on the base and gouged a bit out from the base to make room for some candy treasure. I found the toy pirates, pirate flags, and candles at a party shop. This was mainly a big icing job and was pretty stressful due to the constant fear of the cake collapsing. If you are going to attempt this cake, I would allow about 8 hours. You need to make loads of icing and have a lot of bowls ready to make up the different colours. Also have several piping bags and nozzles so you don’t have to clean out each time you change colour.

You can see I have also used pretzels, rolos, mini M&M’s and Hershey kisses as decorations. I cannot stress how much this cake was appreciated. It was a massive hit with the 3 year olds and parents. It tasted great and managed not to fall apart (despite a few cracks).
