Coolest Pirate Ship Birthday Cake

I made this Pirate Ship Birthday Cake for my sons’ 5th birthday. The ship is made from 2x 11″ square sponge cakes. I cut both the cakes in half and stacked 3 of the halves using butter icing (double the amount of icing sugar to butter), from the remaining half I cut extra bits to heighten the front and back of the ship.

I carved the shape of the ship before ‘glueing’ with the butter icing. I covered the whole ship with a thin layer of butter icing and put it in the fridge for a couple of hours. I then covered the ship in chocolate flavoured sugarpaste (regalice) and made the wood effect using the tip of a sharp knife. The treasure chest is made from the remaining bits of cake and covered in the same way as the ship.

The pirate, cannon, palm tree, shark fins etc are made from sugarpaste and were made a few days earlier to give them a chance to set a bit, the pirate and tree are supported with kebab skewers. The gold is edible gold powder colour made into a paint with rejuvenator spirit. The sea is butter icing, the sand is soft brown sugar. The sails are just paper on kebab skewers.

My little boy loved it and had a brilliant time at his pirate party.
