My son wanted a pirate ship cake for his 10th birthday. The base (ocean) is a sheet cake covered in butter cream and topped with glitter blue icing. Swedish fish are swimming. The treasure chest on top of the crumb cake island is made of fondant covered cake decorated with edible pearls.
The pirate ship is cut and pieced together from two 9×12 cakes. The netting is made from royal icing. Root beer barrel candy and malted milk balls (cannon balls) are placed on top along with Life Saver Butter Rum candies along the sides.
This cake was a huge hit and turned out better than expected.
