Coolest Pirate Ship Cake

I used a basic chocolate cake recipe from The Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook, with the Vanilla Buttercream and Rich Chocolate Buttercream icing for this pirate ship cake. I did 1 1/2 the amount called for in the cake recipe to make a 9×13 sheet cake as well as one 8 inch round cake.

For the pirate ship, I cut the round cake in half, cut off part from the bottom of the ship to make it sit flat, and used the spare pieces of cake to make the island. I cut some cake off the front of the ship to make it more pointed. I used icing to hold the ship pieces together, then placed it in the freezer for about an hour to let it set before icing it.

For the decorations, I used tootsie rolls, malted milk balls and Rolos. I used blue gel icing for the water. I also used pirate and treasure figures from the Little People’s pirate ship. I used candle holders to place the candles into the sides of the ship. For the ship masts, I used skewers and then cut paper pieces to put on them. I printed up a pirate flag for the top as well as the top mast to say, “Happy Birthday!”
