Coolest Pooh and Friends Birthday Picnic Cake

I made this Pooh and Friends Birthday Picnic Cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday. I used the butter cake recipe from the Huggies website. I doubled the mixture and used a roasting pan to bake the cake. It took a bit more time to cook than stated in the recipe due to the size of the cake. I think it was about an extra 20 minutes.

I wanted it to appear as if Pooh and friends were having a birthday celebration in the 100 acre wood. I made all the characters, the little birthday cake and the leaves near the flowers out of marzipan which I simply coloured using food colouring. I used my daughter’s Winnie the Pooh books and got a front and side view of each of the characters. I had to use a toothpick inserted into Tigger and the kangaroos to get them to stand up properly.

I made Pooh first and he took me about 2 hours (several attempts). The other characters each took about an hour to make. The flowers were icing flowers purchased from the supermarket. The green trees at the back are plastic. I used an artists paint brush to paint Tiggers stripes and Poohs eyebrows with black food colouring.
