Cool Homemade Racetrack Birthday Cake Design

This Racetrack Birthday Cake Design was the cake I made for my son’s 2nd birthday. He LOVES anything to do with race cars as his Grandfather owns one! The cake is a simple butter cake made in a large rectangular tin. I iced the cake with white fondant then dyed another batch of fondant black with gel coloring and cut a number 2 out of it (I traced the 2 on to baking paper first then transferred the number to the fondant).

The grass is desiccated coconut dyed green and stuck to the icing with a mixture of glucose syrup and water. The cars are chocolate (bought from the David Jones Food Hall) and the lines on the road are from a white fudge icing pen. The tires are made from licorice strap looped together with toothpicks and the big checkers are made from licorice squares.

The finish line is a little extra fondant rolled out to 2 mm thick and more licorice straps cut to the right size to make checkers. It was very easy, and more importantly, Edwin loved it!
