Coolest Rattlesnake Birthday Cake

I created this Rattlesnake Birthday Cake after finding the “coolest cakes” site and viewing lots of other original snake cakes for my son’s 5th birthday. We invited a park ranger to bring a bull snake to the party (and talk about how to tell the difference between a bull snake and a rattlesnake), so I thought it would be fun to make a rattlesnake cake. I used 4 cakes total – 3 bundt cakes and one rectangular cake. I cut one of the bundts in half, one into a “C” shape, and one into fourths. I then arranged the halves and fourths so that I could “coil” the “C” shaped cake over itself at the front of the snake. I then cut a diamond-shaped piece from the rectangular cake for the head, and frosted the whole thing with 3 different shades of brown frosting.

I used a broken gobstopper for the eyes (with black accent frosting “slits”) and a fruit strip for the tongue, which I cut out with kitchen shears. The hardest part was frosting under/inside the coiled-up portion, but it worked out fine. One of the guests told me the cake was a “masterpiece” so I guess it turned out OK!
