Coolest Rock Star Microphone Cupcakes

I made these Rock Star Microphone Cupcakes for my niece’s 9th birthday party. It was a rock star theme and we wanted to do something a little different. The cupcakes are made from regular box cake mix. The pink ones are just yellow cake with butter cream frosting that was tinted pink and the purple ones are strawberry cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.

The microphones are made out of miniature ice cream cones (which can be tricky to find). I piped some white frosting around the top edge of the cone and inserted a donut hole (I used plain ones but any flavor should work). I frosted the donut hole with more white frosting and then rolled them in silver sugar.

Lastly, I carefully poked a hole in the bottom of the cone and inserted a one-inch piece of licorice (I used red because I couldn’t find any black). I used jumbo cupcakes and these fit perfectly as toppers – they might be a little large for standard sized cupcakes. They were a huge hit!

  1. Are you going to give credit to where you found this idea – What’s New Cupcake?: I have made these for my daughter twice and always tell people I got the idea from this fabulous book.
