Coolest Snake Cake

The idea for this Snake Cake came from another submission on this site, (Coolest Burmese Python Snake Cake 46). I used 2 boxes of cake mix and, like the other submission, a Bundt cake pan for the bottom coil and a Williams-Sonoma donut cake pan for the top two coils. The head is made from rice krispie treats. I started with white fondant and tinted it with moss green and brown gel icing color.

After I rolled it out, I pressed a wire pizza pan onto it to get the scale effect. I painted the markings using brown gel icing color. I found it helpful to dip the brush into the gel and then into clear rum to help the color spread a little easier. The alcohol worked better than water because it evaporated quickly without making the fondant soggy. The eyes are brown M&Ms which gave them the slitted effect but next time I may try jelly beans.

Total decorating time for this project was three hours but that also included having to stop and referee my kids a couple of times. This cake was a lot easier than I expected and my 7 year old son absolutely loved his cake!
