Coolest Spiderman Birthday Cake

This Spiderman Birthday Cake was actually really easy to do. I made it for my boyfriend for his 27th birthday as he was obsessed with Spiderman. I made a yellow cake in a 9×13″ rectangular pan, then once cooled, carved out the shape of the face.

To get the icing really red I used a ton of red food coloring, but it just ended up making it a dark fushia. I was really frustrated, so I googled ways to make it red and decided to buy a jar of Marachino cherries and add the syrup to the icing. It ended up doing the trick…not exactly Spiderman red, but close enough.

To make the webs on the face, I got black shoestring licorice (the kind that comes rolled together like a wheel), unrolled it and started with a vertical line of it down the center, then I formed the eyes. After that, you just work your way out and up from the middle with lines of licorice. The licorice is nice and pliable so its easy to manipulate and bend to how you want it to look.

Finally to make the eyes white, I used shredded coconut. You could use white icing, but I didn’t have any icing sugar left so I had to improvise.
