Coolest Spiderman Birthday Cake Idea

My friend and I wanted to see if we could make cakes like they do on television, so when one of my co-workers wanted a Spiderman cake for her nephew’s birthday, we took on the job and made this Spiderman Birthday Cake Idea.

We made two 1/4 sheet cakes for the base and crumb coated them with buttercream. We thought it would be cool to have Spiderman climbing around one side of the cake instead of on top of it, so he is carved from cereal treats. Then we covered the treats with a thin layer of modeling chocolate, with the exception of his face, which was sculpted out of modeling chocolate and was a bit thicker. This would make the surface smoother in order to cover the entire figure with home made marshmallow fondant.

The webbing on the Spiderman figure is done with black royal icing. The buildings on the top and front of the cake are made from smaller cuts of gray colored fondant. To add the windows, I cut small pieces of yellow fondant, painted a little water on the back of each and placed them on the gray. Then I flipped each gray building piece over and rolled it gently with a rolling pin. The finished buildings looked good!

The biggest problem we had was the web Spidey was shooting to swing to the next building. We tried it in fondant, but it just didn’t look right. In the end, we opted for royal icing.

Overall, this cake was such fun to do! I really enjoyed carving the cereal treats and I’m looking forward to our next one!
