Coolest Spongebob Squarepants Cake

I made this Spongebob Squarepants cake for my son Ethan’s second birthday. I had recently began to experiment with fondant, and thought that Spongebob’s basic shape and color would make this a fun, yet attainable project. The cake was a hit, but Ethan only ate the Twinkie nose.

I used a basic rectangle cake for his body. I scooped out random holes for the sponge effect. The eyes were made by cutting out circle shapes from the scraps from leveling. The sleeves, pant legs, nose, and shoes were made from halves of Twinkies wrapped in colored fondant. The legs and arms are licorice wrapped in fondant.

The cake was iced with butter cream, then covered in fondant which I colored yellow, brown, white, and red. The fondant came white, but I used Wilson’s food coloring to knead color into it. Accents were added by cutting out fondant. I cut shapes for his eyes, mouth, teeth, tongue, tie, and belt using a basic exact-o knife.
