Coolest Strawberry Shortcake Birthday Cake

My daughter requested a Strawberry Shortcake theme for her 3rd birthday.

I made a 2 layer 9-inch cake for the bottom, and a 2 layer 6-inch cake for the top. I even made a strawberry cake to add to the theme. The frosting is butter cream that I made and colored. I used red for the bottom and pink for the top. After frosting, I generously dusted the bottom layer with red sugar, which made the red frosting appear more vibrant without a bitter taste from too much food coloring. I also dusted the top layer with pink sugar, then stacked the two layers.

For the strawberries on the side of the cake, I bought gumdrops and rolled them out. To keep them from sticking (which they will) I rolled them out in granulated sugar, which also helped to keep the gumdrop look. I cut the shapes by hand and attached the pieces with some leftover butter cream. Before adding the strawberry pieces,I piped on a simple vine type design with pink buttercream.

Lastly, I piped a simple border around the bottom of the layers and put the strawberry shortcake candle (found at a local party supply store) on top. I thought it turned out great and everyone at the party loved it!
