Coolest Super Mario Brothers Birthday Cake

I made this Super Mario Brothers Birthday Cake for my nephew who requested a Mario cake for his 7th birthday. The party was on a Friday afternoon so I needed a simple design that didn’t require sculpting and baking a lot of different cakes, etc. so I decided to just make a sheetcake and keep it simple.

I used one of my son’s Mario static stickers to draw the outline onto a piece of paper and then transposed the outline onto the middle of the cake — I got lucky as it was a perfect fit! I used the sticker as my reference to freehand the figure. I had a little bad luck turn into good as I tried a new buttercream recipe that I hadn’t made before. It was really stiff and I didn’t realize until I had it all colored and in decorating bags. However, it worked great for making the grump and toad — I think that is their names — as it was almost like fondant! (You will notice if you are a Mario fan that I forgot Grump’s mean eyebrows — my 5 yr old son was quick to point it out and my husband had to add them at the last minute!)

Everything is out of icing except the following: M&M buttons on Mario’s overalls, his mustache is made out of a piece of tootsie roll which I warmed a few seconds in the microwave to soften so I could form it, the gold foil covered chocolate coins I placed on top of the cupcakes (purchased at Party City), and small M&Ms I cut in half for eyes.

Fun cake as the kids really liked it!
