Coolest Super Mario Galaxy Cake

I made this Super Mario Galaxy Cake for my son, Wyatt’s, 4th birthday. He was recently obsessed with the Mario Galaxy video game, but I couldn’t find a doable example of a cake to fit the theme.

The cake was a stacked 8″ with fondant icing. The green pipe, planet, mushroom, and Lumas were made from rice krispie treats shaped and covered in fondant. The Mario was purchased from Amazon.com. To make the “Mario” font lettering, I free handed the letters (although you could probably just print some from a word program in similar font), cut out the letters, then laid the letters on the rolled fondant.

Then I simply cut around the paper with a knife. I did the white background lettering first, then cut my paper patterns a wee bit smaller to do the colored letters. I just lightly wet the white letters and laid the colored letter on top, let them set up in the fridge a bit before pressing onto cake (with a little more water). I could use a little more practice covering the cake with fondant, since mine fell apart about 6 times before I got it on there and still had to patch a lot.

Ideally, I was looking for a marble look for this icing with dark blues, blacks, purples and whites for a galaxy look. Unfortunately, I had to re-roll the fondant so many times it turned out just one color and I tried to make a star/cosmic effect. I also used a few white star sprinkles.
