Coolest Thomas the Train Birthday Cake

This Thomas the Train Birthday Cake was a fun cake to make, and really not too hard. The cake was a dense chocolate, so it held up really well to stacking. I didn’t use dowels, just frosted each tier and stacked them.

I used all buttercream except for the tree trunks, railroad tracks, and fence. Those were done in chocolate buttercream.

After frosting and stacking tiers, I used a basketweave tip to make the fence and tree trunks, smoothing the trunks a little with a butterknife.

I used a grass tip for the tree tops and the grass around the bottom of the cake. The clouds were made using a large star tip.

Once I piped the railroad, I gently pressed the toy train onto it.

That’s it. Really fun cake.

  2. Hi,
Your tiers should be fine as long as you use a really sturdy cake. Like a good pound cake or the like. A soft, delicate cake will for sure crush.
If you do use a delicate cake, just put a few wooden dowel rods in the bottom tier, in a circular pattern, to support the top. :)
I don’t follow a recipe for my buttercream, but it’s really easy. Cream 3 sticks of softened, salted butter in a large bowl for about 3 minutes, til it’s really creamy and fluffy. Then I add about an 1/8 cup of whole milk or half and half, 3 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract, and probably around 4 cups of powdered sugar, (and cup at a time). Mix until very well combined, give it a taste…it should be buttery, but not overwhelming. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar. Too thick, add more milk, a tablespoon at a time. Mix on high speed for about 4 minutes, til it’s lightened and fluffy and smooth. Enjoy!
