Coolest Topsy Turvy Baby Shower Cake

I have always wanted to make a homemade Topsy Turvy baby shower cake, but needed the right occasion to do it. I thought a candy themed baby shower was the perfect time to try it. I researched how to make it online and this is what I came up with.

I baked three 9-inch cakes for the base, and two 6-inch cakes for the top tier (they were a little larger in height). I stacked and filled two layers for the base tier. I split the third layer diagonally and stacked it to have a slanted top. Then I did a crumb coating over the whole base and cut out a 6-inch circle so I could set the top layer on a level surface. I repeated the steps with the 6-inch layers.

Both tiers are covered with homemade MM fondant. I decorated the bottom with different colored strips of fondant before placing the top tier on. There are supporting dowels in the bottom tier and the top tier is on it’s own cake board. Then I put the polka dots on the top tier and finished up with candy accents to tie in the shower theme.

It was a little tricky to cut out the “level” circle to place the top tier on, but all in all I was very happy with the result. The mommy-to-be loved it and was able to take the top tier home to share with her husband and daughter.

  1. I’ve worked with fondant a little but I was wondering how since the cakes are slanted that you would prevent the overlapping when you’re smoothing it all out? How do you do that when it overlaps and you want a smooth look?
