Coolest Topsy Turvy Halloween Birthday Cake

I was asked to make this Topsy Turvy Halloween Birthday Cake for a friend’s daughter’s 13th Birthday party. I had never attempted a Topsy-Turvy cake, but it ended up being fairly simple.

The party was held at Halloween, so she requested a black, orange, and purple cake. I baked layers of chocolate and vanilla cream cheese pound cake, with butter cream icing and fondant over all layers. The bottom layer was stacked vanilla pound cake, carved at an angle, then butter cream was placed in between the layers.

I repeated this step for the middle and top layers. In the top layer, I carved out a shallow hole large enough to place the middle layer on top of the bottom layer. I repeated this step on the middle layer, and placed the top layer in that shallow hole. All the decorations are also fondant, except for the “13” on top, which is actually wood numbers that I painted with a sparkly purple paint.

I added some cake wire with clear jewels to dress it up a bit. The cake was very sturdy, stayed together well, and required no dowel rods. The cake was a hit!
