Coolest Toy Story Birthday Cake

I loved the ideas already on this site for a Toy Story Birthday Cake especially for Andy’s bed and went from there to make it my own. I started with a cardboard base covered in contact paper to look like a wood floor. There are two 9×13 cakes lightly frosted (crumb coat) and covered in white fondant and the corners folded to look like sheets.

The bottom “box spring” layer has wooden dowels cut to size to support the weight of the top layer and fondant quilt. The quilt was laid on next and I used tinted fondant and a toothpick pushed horizontally (and lightly) into the surface for the diamond pattern. A strip of white fondant along the top looks like a folded over sheet.

The pillow was made by wrapping two graham crackers together with fondant and pinching the ends to look like a pillow. The headboard is one graham cracker wrapped in brown tinted fondant. The four bed posts are fondant wrapped pretzel rods with a fondant wrapped Whopper on top. I used a small brush dipped in water to get the fondant to stick to the grahams, pretzels, and Whoppers. I used royal icing to attach the bed posts and headboard to the cake. Next time I will tint the royal icing to blend in a little bit better. I cut out tinted fondant using some alphabet cookie cutters for the name and number.

I attached the figurines using more royal icing and it was ready to go! Enjoy, this was a really fun cake to construct.

  2. I like your ideas for the bedposts and pillow. I can’t really see the headboard in the picture. I need to make a Toy Story cake for my son who’s birthday is in a couple of weeks. Could you share how long this one took you? I was looking for something simple, but creative, and I think I found it!! Thanks for sharing.

  3. It took me about 3-4 hours after the cakes were baked and cooled. I let the fondant harden overnight before adding the figurines the next day.

I have better pictures of the headboard and cake altogether, so if you want to leave your e-mail address I can send them to you.

  4. I love this cake too!! I also want to see the headboard if you don’t mind. This is great! I was starting to stress out on how to make the toy story cake for my son’s birthday, but now I feel at ease since you make it look so easy! What kind of cake board did you use? Is it wood designed foil? Here’s my email address: kanzevino@zoominterne.net

    Thanks!

  5. This looks fantastic and I am going to give it a try for my son’s 4th birthday. Questions: You mentioned that you let the fondant harden over night before adding the characters…how did you store it? Did you have to let the “bed sheet” fondant harden before adding the “quilt” fondant? And I would love to see more pics: kristianshaw@yahoo.com Thanks!!

  6. Could you please send some more photos of this cake to fivefoll@yahoo.com? I’m not sure how to do the box spring layer that you used the dowels for. Could you help me out with that? Did you do the toothpick pattern after the fondant was on the bed or before? This cake is adorable and you were so creative! Thank you.

  8. I love your design and thinking of making one sort of like it. I was wondering did you let the quilt harden over night? And as for the dowels, did you place them on each corner of the cake? Also, can I see a picture with the headboard? Thanks a lot.

  15. Your cake is beautiful and I’m hoping to replicate it for my son’s birthday next month. Can you please explain more about the box spring layer? I didn’t realize that the weight of the fondant would require the “mattress” to be reinforced. Also, this will be my first attempt at a cake more complicated than buttercream icing piping. Do you think it’s too advanced for a beginner?

    Thank you!

  28. Hello, I wrote a comment on the 20th and thought that I entered my email address, but it didn’t show up on the comment page for some reason? 29. Sorry everyone who is leaving comments on here. I have tried several times to post my blog address which has additional pictures of the cake along with my e-mail address and whoever posts these comments is editing them so you can’t see the information. My last post was edited very heavily. I am not profiting monetarily from you going to my blog, it just has the space for more pictures. The best thing to do is to e-mail me directly (email listed above) and I will be more than happy to help you out and get you my blog address since this site doesn’t want to post it.

    Thanks.

  35. When you mentioned a box spring, do you mean you have 3 layers and the bottom one is just a box? I noticed you said you wrapped 2 cakes in white, so I wanted to know if you put a block or something under there… Could you email additional information about the cake? I have a friend who would love for me to build her this cake. Thank you!
