Coolest Toy Story Cakes

For his 6th birthday, my son requested a homemade Toy Story cake that reflected each of his favorite characters. I came up with the idea of doing three separate tiers to represent different characters by looking at ideas here on “Coolest Birthday Cakes”. I didn’t want to have to worry about stacking the tiers at the last minute, so I decided to use Wilton’s 3 Tier Party Stand.

I also didn’t like the idea of using commercial fondant and decided to make my own Marshmallow Fondant. On the advice of an experienced decorator, I substituted marshmallow cream for solid marshmallows and had no problems at all.

The hot wheels loop/track is made from Wilton Gum Paste and was formed once the Gum Paste was about 60-70% hardened. The characters were found in ‘buddy packs’ at a local retail store. The ‘sign’ was made using Wilton’s letter molds and it was very difficult and time consuming getting them formed and released without getting messed up. The sign was attached to a regular cake dowel using gum paste glue (Wilton recipe) and candy melts (to camouflage the yellow paste look).

  1. That cake is fabulous! Quick question– I make marshmallow fondant as well and have been wondering how the marshmallow cream would work. How much did one jar of cream make?

  8. Love this cake I’m also making a toy story cake with marshmallow fondant super easy but messy I found the recipe and how to do it on you tube it’s about 16oz bag of mini marshmallows, 2lbs of powdered sugar, and 3tbls of water also Crisco to grease everything that would touch the fondant including hands counter etc..cover the counter with Crisco and then the sugar and heat the marshmallows with the tbls 1:30 min (3 intervals of 30 seconds)pour it on the counter and start mixing it with the sugar till start getting hard like fondant… (very messy but fun!)
(a little tip I learned…when it start getting too hard grease your hands with Crisco and work it with your hands until it’s soft) Good Luck!!
