Coolest Train Cake

My son absolutely loves trains. For his second birthday I decided to attempt the task to make him an amazing train cake.

The day before I made 3 loaf cakes. I also used a green bean can for the engine. I sprayed it with Pam and flour prior to filling the can 3/4 full with batter. Baked it in the oven (after removing the label of course). This slid right out of the can once cooled.

I covered a large cutting board with foil and this is where my cake sat. It was nice and sturdy and I wasn’t worried about the base buckling like with cardboard. The cars were attached using pretzel sticks. I went to our local craft store and found plastic cake animals to place on the cake. I built the cage with pretzel sticks. The wheels are made from oreos with a dot of white frosting in the middle. The steampipe was a marshmellow decorated in frosting. For the dirt we crushes grahm crackers and placed them on the cutting board.

I found it easier to decorate when the frosting was cold, this prevented it from running down the side of the cake while decorating. Once the cake was finished i placed it in the fridge until the party. All together it took less than two hours for me to complete this cake with my sister.

Everyone was completely amazed when they saw this cake and realized that i didn’t get it from a professional.
