Coolest Treasure Chest Birthday Cake

Thanks to the ideas on this site I made the following Treasure Chest Birthday Cake for my son’s 5th Pirate Birthday.

I used 1 1/2 tray bake brownie cakes for the sponge (two halves sandwiched together for the base, one half on foiled card for the lid). The cakes were covered in brown coloured royal icing and decorated with chocolate coins and licorice laces.

The hardest part was balancing the lid, but I used off cuts from the unused half of a cake, cut and stuck on as wedges. These I hid by using lots of coins.

The straps were licorice laces and the nails, mini smarties. The key hole was painted on with edible colouring. The look was completed by placing on the lemon sherbet sand.

Thank you for all the ideas, one happy pirate!
