Coolest Treasure Chest Cake

I made this Treasure Chest Cake for my son’s 7th birthday. He rally wanted to have a pirate birthday party so I made 2 13×9 chocolate cakes and added chocolate butter icing between the layers of the cake and frosted the top and the sides of the cake. For the lid I used foil covered cardboard and frosted the top with the chocolate icing with darker icing.

I piped a border on edges of the lid, for handles on the sides of the chest, for the key-hole and the strips in front and back of the cake. (I also wrote HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY on top of the lid.) Secure the lid with 3(3-1/2 inch) skewers in the back and 2(7-1/2inch) skewers in the middle (top) of the cake.

I filled the chest with candy necklaces, chocolate coins, jaw breakers, candy rings and bubble gum. It was really not hard to make, just use your imagination. My son loved it and so did all his friends.
