Coolest Volcano Birthday Cake

My son wanted a Volcano Birthday Cake for his 7th birthday. He is very much a realist, so the pressure to make it as realistic as possible was on!

I used 12, 10 , 9, 8, 7, 6, and 4 inch cake pans – stacking them on top of each other to make the cone shape. I used chocolate buttercream icing for the outside, and broken up Little Debbie cakes for the dirt and boulders. When the entire cake was assembled, I cut out the top of the cake to the size of a shot glass.

I put the shot glass into the top, and when it was time to serve it, we added dry ice and water. The “lava” was made using the liquid ice cream shell stuff you can buy at the grocery store. It worked really well because it slowly came down the sides of the cake. I colored the vanilla flavored ice cream shell stuff with candy food coloring (the oil based kind).

It was overall a very easy cake to make, and he was thrilled with the results!

  1. I love this cake. So cute and not too difficult. The shell ice cream topping is an excellent idea. I didn’t think it would set-up though. Wow, this definitely gives me ideas. Terrific cake!
