Coolest Volcano Cake

My son had a Mad Science party for his 7th birthday. He wanted a cake that blew up. So we decided on a Volcano cake that erupted with dry ice.

The cake was made using the Wilton doll cake pan. I took a small playdoh can (ran it through the dishwasher), cut a hole in the top of the cake and placed it in it. I then frosted the cake with chocolate frosting. For the lava I took a can of white frosting and put it into the microwave for a few second. Once it was runny, I tinted it with Copper and Orange food color. I used a spoon and held it over the cake to drizzle it down the sides. The dirt around the cake is Chips Ahoy cookies pulverized in the food processor.

My son decided the Volcano needed dinosaurs. So he took toy dinosaurs and placed it around the cake. Right before serving we placed dry ice and water in the playdoh can and let it erupt.

I was very pleased with the way it turned out. And it was so easy to make. Everyone loved it. I had older siblings and parents of his friends taking pictures of it and texting it to friends and family.
