Elmo Alphabet Cake

Like most 2 year old’s, my son is an Elmo fanatic. So what else could I do for his birthday but to make an Elmo’s Alphabet Cake? I got the idea for this cake from another mother on this site but put my own touches on it. My son is learning the alphabet so I thought I’d put letters on it.

The base of the cake is a 12×18 sheet cake (which takes 4 cake mixes) and Elmo’s face is the Elmo cake pan by Wilton (which takes 1 cake mix). I made both cakes 2 day’s before the party, refrigerating the large one and freezing Elmo (large one wouldn’t fit in my freezer).

The next day I decorated it with butter cream icing, smoothing it out on the base cake. I used a large star tip for Elmo’s face and did every letter in the alphabet around the bottom. Make sure you make at least 5 batches of icing for this cake.

I thought it would take me a long time to decorate but it ended up only taking a couple of hours. I have a nursing baby so I had to keep stopping. I refrigerated the cake over night and it was really moist. Everyone loved it. Especially my son!

  1. Love this cake! I was wondering how you froze the cake? Do you let it cool and take it out of the Wilton pan or do you cover it with foil and freeze the cake in the pan?

  2. thank you so much for putting how much cake mix you used for the cake pans. I am doing the same for my daughter’s birthday, and I didn’t know exactly how much cake mix to use!!
