Cool Homemade George Pig Birthday Cake

My 2 year old son is slightly obsessed with Peppa Pig and her brother George, so for his 2nd birthday I thought I would try to make a George Pig cake. I used tips from a blog about making a Thomas the Tank Engine cake

I made the cakes (a large square and a round tin cake) in advance and  followed the advice on the blog to freeze the cakes.  This allowed me to cut the template out on the cakes without too many crumbs/breakages! I created the template for the cake from a Peppa Pig book we had at home. I used the butter cream recipe from the blog on the website and followed the suggestion of doing a “crumb coat”.

I bought green ready to roll icing for the dinosaur. I added gel color hit pink to white fondant icing for the cheeks, arms, eyes, tail.  The cake is a packet cake, Betty Crocker Devil’s food cake (chocolate). George’s head is one piece…cut from the square tin. Cutting when the cake is in the process of defrosting allows you to cut more accurately. I iced the head first.

The body is cut from the round tin. I iced the edge that joins the head separately and this allowed me to stick it together easily. I then finished icing the body.  I had made the legs/arms/eyes/nose/mouth the night before, suit was easy to simply place them in the appropriate spots.

The dinosaur I also made the night before. I added his teeth/spikes and top legs with writing icing.
