Homemade Camouflage Cake

My friend Suzanne and I met when we were in the 7th grade. Now we are in our 40s, and each year I have had the privilege of making her son Aiden’s birthday cakes. This year, Suzanne planned a Nerf dart tag party for Aiden (like paintball, only with Nerf projectiles) for his 7th birthday. We were brainstorming cake ideas, and Suzanne suggested a camouflage cake or a cake that looked like a target. I thought it would be fun to combine the two. I made a two-layer, 10″ round cake and covered it with a chocolate icing crumb coat. I drew the camouflage pattern freehand with the tip of a knife, then filled in the sections with the colored icing using a small tapered spatula. I used a round cooling rack to imprint the target pattern in the top of the cake, then filled in with the orange and black icing using a pastry bag with a star tip. The target has 7 rings, for 7 years, with a candle in each ring. The finishing touch was two bullet holes, which were made by inserting a clean mascara tube to make the hole. I then used a wide leaf tip to pipe large orange “petals” coming out around the hole, then finished by using a toothpick dipped in black icing to give it the burned look by streaking the orange petals. It was easy, so much fun, and a big hit with the first-grade crowd.
