Cool Homemade McQueen Cake

I was interested in making cakes, so when I said I’d make my first cake for my nephew’s 3rd birthday, I thought a McQueen cake would be easy. It took a lot longer than I thought.

The bottom cake is made from a 1/2 sheet cake pan. The top cake is the Lightning McQueen Wilton cake pan. Before I placed the smaller cake on top, I made a road using the black, the grass, and the sky. I did the extras after placing the Lightning McQueen cake on top (the special piping for the grass and the white road markers). I iced the smaller cake right on top of the larger one.

I iced the Lightning McQueen by the directions that came with the pan (I used all buttercream icing). I had some cake batter left over (the smaller pan only uses half of the cake mix) so I put the rest in a Pampered Chef Bar Pan and let it spread, so when it baked, it was about 1 inch thick. I cut out the Flag and the tires out of that cake.

I iced everything with buttercream icing. The car part actually took longer than the rest of the cake did altogether.
