Monkey Birthday Cake

Thanks to a number of great cake photos and descriptions I found here I was able to create this Monkey Cake for my son’s first Birthday.

I made three 9′ cakes, I made Banana cake. I trimmed down the tops of two cakes so they were somewhat level on top and layered them with chocolate icing. Then I used the third cake to cut out two ~3″ circles. One circle was cut in half and then trimmed into two moon shapes for ears, I used the chocolate icing again to secure them. The second circle was used to create the raised nose area, again secured with chocolate icing.

I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a Betty Crocker icing tool that had various tip attachments. I put on the vanilla icing first using a butter knife to the areas I wanted white. I wet the knife to get a smooth finish. Then using a star tip I used the icing tool to ice the remainder of the cake in chocolate. Then I used a fine point tip to do the nose and mouth. I was able to get the cake iced in roughly half an hour. I probably spent half an hour assembling it. This was my first time making a decorated cake so I didn’t bother to try and make my own icing this time, so I just used store made.
