Fun Homemade R2D2 Cake

I made this for the 30th birthday party of three boys who never grew up and they all absolutely loved it!

I baked five sponge cakes in Victoria Sandwich tins and stacked them up with lemon butter icing and lemon curd in between. Then I baked another sponge cake in a pudding basin for the head. The leg were cut from a final sponge cake baked in a shallow roasting tin.

The whole thing is covered in lemon buttercream and then fondant icing. I iced the body before icing the pudding basin head to make it easier and then stuck them together with buttercream. The leg are also iced first and then stuck on using buttercream.

The decorations are cut from fondant icing coloured with blue or a small amount of black to make grey. These were rolled out and cut and then stuck on with water.

Not only did it look good but it tasted delicious!!

  1. I think that is the best cake I have ever seen!
Though I would say that, I am one of the 3 boys who never grew up! Thanks again.

  2. I think your cake is fantastic, you have given me inspiration to have a go myself as I have a 10 year old son who loves Star Wars. If it comes out as wonderful as yours I’ll be very happy!
