Cool Homemade Zebra-Striped Safari Cake

The base cake was two layers, one white and the other chocolate. The monkey cake was baked in a small loaf pan. I stood it on end and cut the rough shape of the head. For each corner of the base cake I colored fondant to match the elphant, zebra, lion and giraffe hides. The zebra hide look was done by making white and black ‘snakes’ and laying them side-by-side before rolling them out. The giraffe was done by rolling out the light brown fondant halfway to the final size then laying dark brown flattened balls before finshing rolling to thickness.

The monkey is covered with chocolate fondant. His face and banana is from colored white fondant. His arms and legs are rolled fondant also. The grass at the monkey base is edible candy grass bought around easter time. The small animals are plastic. The monkey was removed for the cake that our one-year-old was given to eat all by himself for his first birthday.
