Cool Homemade Volcano Cake

I made this cake for my son’s 8th birthday. We were having a Luau and I really wanted the cake to match the theme.

I made a 6 layer Red Velvet Cake with round 9′ pans for the volcano and a 13X9 rectangle white cake for the beach. For the volcano I stacked the layers and trimmed starting at the top and slanting down to form the volcano shape. What is really great is that because it is a volcano..it doesn’t have to be perfectly shaped. I then cut the white cake in 4 pieces to wedge in around the bottom of the volcano. I used chocolate icing for the volcano and cream cheese icing for the beach. Once the volcano was completely covered with icing I used red and orange icing to create flowing lava down the sides and around the top of the volcano. On the beach I used granulated brown sugar crystals ro create a more sandy look. I took leftover Red Velvet Cake from the trimmings and crumbled it up around the edges of the bottom of the cake to create a lava rock look. I also used Coco Puff cereal as rocks around the cake. I purchased palm trees to place on the beach and the whole cake sat on a tin foiled covered piece of wood that I had decorated with teal icing to look like the ocean complete with a little white swirled in to create waves and gummy sharks. Again my favorite part of this cake is that it doesn’t have to be perfectly shped because volcanos are bumpy and jagged.
