Western Star First Birthday Cake

I had started looking at cakes for my son’s first birthday and instantly fell in love with a 2-3 tier cake. However when I called to get a cake price, I was quoted wedding cake prices. I could not afford to spend $150+ on my sons cake. We were doing a cowboy them for my son’s first birthday. I continued to google “western birthday cakes” and “cowboy birthday cakes” and came to the conclusion that I was going to bake and decorate my sons first birthday cake! I bought my supplies and went to work the day before his birthday.

This cake took me a total of 14 hours to complete. I am sure there were ways to streamline it, but I was nervous and kept going to you-tube and watched cake decorating videos. :-) I did not bake my cakes from scratch. For the bottom cake I used Betty Crocker German Chocolate with a Dulce de Leche filling! SOOOO good! The top cake is a Vanilla cake with a strawberry buttercream filling. The frosting is a combo of the boxed Wilton Buttercream frosting and from scratch buttercream frosting. The stars are the only part of the cake made from fondant, as well as the rope border.

I hope you enjoyed looking and reading about my sons first birthday cake. It was a major hit at the party, and I am really proud of it being my first cake! Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about it. lacied07@hotmail.com
