This cake was for a friend's 30th birthday! She adores angels and always wanted a 'barbie' type cake so this is what I made for her. I made 3 layers of vanilla hot milk sponge, two round and one in a stainless bowl. I then layered them with the bowl one ontop and trimmed the edges into a dome 'dress' shape. I then iced between the layers with vanilla butter icing. I gave the whole dress a crumbcoat and stuck in the freezer for about 20 minutes to set. Then I did the final layer of icing using the same vanilla butter icing, smoothing it down with a large spatula. I placed the rest into a piping bag with a number 2 nozzle and piped random squiggles around 3/4 of the dress. I inserted the barbie doll into the middle of the dress and continued the piping over her upper body forming the illusion of a fitted corset with straps. I then used gold string to adorn her head like a halo and attach the wings, which were made of tranparancy paper with gold glitter wings drawn on. The cake board was covered with gold foil to match. The result was great and delicious and loved by all.
My goddaughter was born premature and we have come to think of her as a miracle, so when I decided to do her baptism cake, I decided that an angel cake would be perfect.
I had always wanted to work with fondant so I gave it a try. I found a marshmallow fondant receipe online and was amazed at how easy it is to work with. I printed the angel of my computer and tinted little pieces of fondant to do the details. I then cut the face, the dress, the hands and feet, every piece using the picture as a stencil.
I then rolled the yellow fondant and put it on the cake (two double layer square cake, one chocolate, one vanilla, side by side) I made the letters with fondant too, rolling it like playdough and placing it on the cake. I loved making it and will surely work with fondant again!!
This angel wings birthday cake was really fun to make. I used a 10" cake tin and this to was double up to be able to fill with homemade butter cream and strawberry jam. It was left in the fridge and straightened, all the sides to look perfect (hopefully ).
The cake itself was quite difficult as had to cut the angel wings shape by hand. I then had to hand cut all of the feathers and this took absolutely ages as you can imagine. I hope you like the cake. I am pretty proud of the outcome.
