I've decided to make myself a hello kitty birhday cake. I just turned 34... I had to bake the layers in my toaster oven because my oven element broke... So I made six layers of what they call biscuit gênoise (kind of like sponge cake) about 1 to 2 inches thick that I baked in a foil pan that fits in my toaster oven. I made two piles of 3 layers to make a large rectangular cake. I drew a cake template of kitty's face, pinned it to the cake using toothpicks and cut out the cake the best that I could. I made 3 shades of ordinary butter icing and left a piece of "butter colour" for the nose. So I soldered the layers using a very thin layer of icing - some layers i sprinkled with brandy- and iced the top and sides with pistachio coloured icing which I preferred to yellow for her fur. I used purple for her eyes and of course, red for her bow. I brushed her whiskers with some blue food colouring.
The cake is WASC with almond buttercream frosting. I made the hibiscus using a cutter I bought and found intructions on the web. They are made with gum paste, fondant, bought stamens, dust colored the petals with red and yellow colored petal dust after they dried. The other flowers are frangipanis (another hawaiian flower)also painted with petal dust. The sand is crushed vanilla wafers and brown sugar mix, the shells are made from a mold using white melting chocolate and then dusted with colored petal dust. The flip flops are made from nutter butters, covered in MM fondant, and decorated with royal icing. Also blue MM fondant for the water.
this cake was baked in a loaf tin split in half then filled and covered in buttercream.the board was then covered in white fondant and also the cake.i then did a quilted effect on the cake and added dragees to each diamond.i made a pink flower and put it as a fastener on bag and added a white beaded handle.i also added a pink ribbon to the board.i made a pink beaded necklace and added lustre dust to make it shine.also made a nail varnish and a lipstick adding lustre dust to both of them.i then made a plaque so i could write the words happy birthday.
Sarah & Her Dad - her penguin cake and his peach pie
A picture of penguins close up
My daughter is a big fan of cakes. She only wanted a German chocolate cake with coconut pecan icing. So I decided to make it special by doing a double layer. Then writing Happy Birthday with some icing I had left in refrigerator. Then I thought about penguins and how much she loved them. It took me four stores to find the Happy Feet Characters. There is one character placed by her husband, her Dad, her Mom, and her two step-children. She was thrilled with the cake. See she also got Happy Feet Two DVD for her 26th birthday.
I made two round cakes bottom one was 10 inch the top was 8 inch for that layered effect. I made buttercream icing and tinted it teal (the color of their team) then used floral wire that I shaped by wrapping around a wooden spoon to attach a cheer picture and my daughters name. I used some foam cut outs to spell out "GO FIGHT WIN" Cake was super simple and a hit!
