This cake was for my mom's 55th birthday. The cake is a french vanilla cake with almond extract 1- 6" and 2-8" layers. It is iced inside with a buttercream icing then covered in a fondant. The top is covered in chocolate fondant and the bottom is a pink colored fondant. The dots were cut out with an icing tip and I used a toothpick to poke through the icing tip hole to release the dots. I cut out various strips using a pizza cutter and a fondant cutter.
I assembled my cake and stuck on the various strips and dots using water as the bond. Once that was done I use strips about 3/4 of an inch in width and 3 inches in length. I loop them over my finger and assemble them around the top of the cake until my bow was formed.
Last I cut two pieces of fondant and cut an insert from the bottom of each strip to form the last part of my bow. The bow was bonded with water as well.
Helpful hint is it much better to use gumpaste in making a bow as it creates a fuller look and the loop forms much better. And the bow should be made at least a day in advance to give it time to dry and hardened.
My Daughter was having a hard time turning 40 this year. She did not want anything with numbers or anything black. i decided to show her how much she grew and what she had to be proud of.I showed her in the most tasteful why i could. She really loved what i did. The cake is 2x12" rounds, 2x10" rounds, and 2x8" round on top. They are all white cakes tarted and filled with white chocolate ganache. They all have a cardboard plate and dowels in between them. The pictures are of course edible. The flowers are also made of edible gumpaste. the designs between the pictures are all free hand piping. The frosting is a italian buttercream. She does not like the texture of fondant so the whole cake is buttercream. I really enjoyed making this cake. It meant alot to my Daughter and that is what it is all about.
My dad turned 60 and he isn't an emotional type guy. He does everything for everyone and never asks for anything in return. For his birthday I desided to make him a timeline cake showing his as a son, husband, father and grandfather. I wanted to put images of those of us he was this person to. I took pictures to my local grocery store and asked in the cake dpeartment if they could print the pictures so they were edible. For $6.00 per sheet they did. These pictures were on 1 sheet. It was great.
My cousin loves music and originally wanted black and red cupcakes, but I knew that adding white would make a more attractive amd matching combination. With a tower that I already have, I went to Michaels and got musical ribbon, which I glued on top of red ribbon and attached it to the tower. I saved the top to add a personal cake with I added musical notes and plastic guitars on the top. It came out really great. It was really easy.
