Coolest Thomas the Tank Engine Birthday Cake

I made this Thomas the Tank Engine cake for my son’s third birthday. He is a huge fan of Thomas and Friends and wanted a Thomas-themed cake. This was my first try at fondant, and I found that it was much easier than I had expected.

The cakes are a 10” and a 6” white almond sour cream cake, with vanilla buttercream frosting and filling. I used marshmallow fondant to make the animals, the trees, the hills, the tunnel, the sun, and the train tracks. The clouds were made of Royal icing, and the grass was buttercream, piped with the Wilton grass tip.

The topper was a design I did on the computer, printed out and then mounted on foam paper. I glued it to lollipop sticks using melted white chocolate. The #3 was made from gumpaste and fondant. The trains were from my son’s own collection.

This cake turned out to be much easier than I had anticipated and I was really happy with the results. And my son just LOVED it!

  1. My son loves Thomas too, if I can make one half as good as this for his birthday next February then I’d be well and truly chuffed to bits!! This is fabulous – and amazing for your first go at fondant!!!
