Homemade Golf Cake

This cake was recently made for my Father-in-Law?s 61st birthday. It is a chocolate cake covered with white fondant. The green is also fondant as is the flag (on a wooden grill skewer) and the golf club. The flag marked hole 61 with numbers cut from fondant as well. The sand trap was made with brown sugar and the water was a sparkly gel icing. Around the perimeter, I wrote Happy Birthday and painted on blades of grass with gel icing.

The fondant was homemade marshmallow fondant and actually pretty tasty unlike most fondant that i have tried. It was really quick and easy to make and work with. I just took half a bag (8oz) of marshmallows and two tablespoons of water and microwaved for 1 minute. Mix to make sure that all of the marshmallows are melted. Add four cups of confectioners sugar (one cup at a time until the consistency is workable). Make sure to keep hands and workspace covered with confectioners sugar. I have done this using crisco to keep things from sticking, and it alters the taste of the fondant.
