Homemade Kitty Birthday Cake

We baked a Victoria sandwich sponge for this cake doubling the recipe for each of 2 x 8″ square tins. Sandwiched together with a little strawberry jam and buttercream, we covered the outside of the sponge with a thin layer of buttercream and covered the sponge and the cakeboard with fondant. We used colouring gel to colour the fondant in the relevant colours and cut the shapes out to place on top of the cake, the window shutters were placed on top of the window for a 3D effect. Whiskers and facial details were piped on using small tubes of ready made icing gel. The flower decorations are just shaped out of coloured fondant and the whole cake was dusted with pink edible cake decorating glitter just to give an extra thrill to a little girl.

A little tip we learned was not to sprinkle the glitter on a damp surface, make sure the cake is dry first.
