Homemade Cars 2nd Birthday Cake

A Cars themed birthday cake for my son’s 2nd birthday! I was inspired by some of the photos on this site.

I did an Oreo cookie crumb “2” racetrack, used black licorice laces as edging between the racetrack and grass, tinted green coconut for grass and made marshmallow fondant squares for the checkered sides. I even ended up filling it with vanilla custard when I had to make a second cake to make it taller. (I read somewhere that I should pipe icing around the edge of the bottom layer before filling it with custard and I am very glad that I did that. I only had a little bit of oozing out the sides.) I bought a cake decorating kit that had the car, checkered flag, the pick with three vehicles and sprinkles (which I didn’t use).

I’ve never made fondant, never made a filled/layered cake and am definitely not a cake decorator so I’m really happy with the way it turned out. You can totally make this cake, too!
