Racetrack Birthday Cake

My son wanted a racetrack cake for his birthday but the ones at the supermarkets seemed very lame so I looked on this site for ideas and then added my own.

First I sketched out the cake on a piece of paper because I not only wanted the racetrack but I sort of wanted a 6 in it as well. The last part didn’t happen as well as planned–but the cake came out well.

I took a rectangular cake, cut off the ends to give it a flat edge and cut a round cake in half and added a half to each end of the rectangle. I frosted the whole cake with white icing. I then added the racetrack and the checkerboard on the sides. I then added the yellow lines, red outline and green sugar crystals as grass. Lastly was his name which was hard as it didn’t stick to the crystals. So, I used a toothpick to create a sort of “moat” for the yellow icing to sit in which worked out better. Lastly he put the cars on–one in the “winner’s circle”, one going into the pit and one right after the finish line.

He loved it and so did our family when they came over to celebrate.
