Coolest Commander Cody Cake

This Commander Cody Cake is my third fondant cake.

I got the idea for this cake from a picture of a helmet my son wanted. I was really nervous carving out the helmet out of cake, so I bought a Styrofoam block at my local crafts store and carved out the helmet, using sand paper to give it a smooth round finish. I then covered it in buttercream and home-made marshmallow fondant (which I also colored myself).

I made paper templates of all the individual details to make sure everything was true to size and then cut them out of fondant. You can look online for any picture and blow it up to whatever size you need it and make the templates.

I was amazed at how easy it was to do the detailing. I used vanilla extract to help my cut-outs stick to the helmet and then I used luster dust to give it a used/aged look, which my son called “cool battle scars”.

The actual edible cake was a 14 inch marble cake, with buttercream frosting, decorated with marshmallow fondant. I have step by step pictures if anyone is interested, let me know.
