Cool Homemade Flower Cake for my Mother

I made this Homemade Flower Cake for my mother’s 60th birthday. It is a 2 layer 8″ round vanilla cake filled with chocolate fudge buttercream and fresh strawberries.

When filling the cake, I found it easier to put a layer of frosting on both cakes (top of the bottom layer and bottom of the top layer) and a ridge of frosting around the edge of the bottom layer to keep the strawberries from oozing out the sides. Then, I flipped the top layer over onto the bottom layer to complete the filling. I then crumb-coated the entire cake and let it set before frosting and decorating.

Once the cake was set, I covered the entire cake with white buttercream (using clear vanilla helps, or use a tiny bit of purple coloring to take out the brown tinge of regular vanilla color). Then I made a parchment paper piping bag and free-formed the trunks and branches of the cherry trees; I used a star tip to create the cherry blossoms on the trees.

The cake was finished up with a green border and writing.
