Homemade Thomas Birthday Cake

This was a cake for my son who was turning 3. He just loves Thomas the Train and all of his friends, so of course that was the theme of the party. I found such wonderful inspirations on this site and blended a few ideas to make his cake, cake 97 and cake 136 in particular.

I used Triple Chocolate Fudge cake mix. The bottom tier is two layers using a 8″ x 3″ circle pan and the top tier is two layers using a 6″ x 3″ circle pan. I have used fondant in the past and all of my family members say how beautiful it is but leave it all on their plates, so this time I used a homemade buttercream to fill and decorate the entire cake. I used gel dye to tint the icing to match the Thomas colors using a box from a Thomas toy as reference.

After a crumb coat hardened a bit, I iced the cakes and assembled it. We needed to travel to the party (Chuck E. Cheese yay!) so I put support dowels in the bottom tier, put on the top tier, and then stuck one sharpened dowel through both to secure it. The images on the bottom tier were stickers we already had. I just stuck them on and framed them in buttercream to “seal” the edges and keep them on. Then I added Wilton brand star sprinkles to the top tier (found at a craft store) It turned out very well! Everyone loved it!
