I made this cross cake for my daughters first communion. I don't like to buy shaped pans because some are too expensive for a cake you will only need once or twice so I found online how to cut a cross shape from two 9x13 pan!I will try to explain the easiest way-but you can search online for it too.
Once cooled cut the cake in half long ways so you have two equal long parts. Then cut one of those equal parts in half-so you have 1long and 2 smaller equal. Then cut one of those smaller parts in half. So now you have one long, one medium size and 2 equal small ones.
Place the medium square on your board (this is the top of cross) then place the long piece underneath that one-this will make one very long piece-the middle of cross. Then put the 2 small pieces left on each side of the long piece where the middle & long piece meets. This makes the cross! Sounds difficult but trust me its so easy and so much better and cheaper than buying a pan when everyone as 9x13!
I did use buttercream icing for this only because it really the only way to make roses! My daughter wanted pink roses and pink dot trim. I made 10 roses-casscading downward. I added vines and leaves using #3 tip and the leaf tip.
I hand wrote the wording. And I also used a small plastic rosery which I just layed across the roses.
