Homemade Zebra Print Birthday Cake

This is a cake I made for my daughter’s 11th birthday! I have been making cakes for some time now – I’m actually in the process of trying to find ideas for her 14th birthday cake! I have been making cakes since she was three but have just started working with fondant in the last three years. This was actually my first cake with fondant.

On this cake I used a 9″ circle pan for the base and a 6″ for the top. They are both two layers with yellow cake. I just used a Pillsbury box cake. I haven’t been too successful in scratch cakes, but I’m working on it.

The fondant is Wilton’s. My first experience with fondant was Wilton’s rolled fondant in white – and I learned quick! This is difficult because you have to color it and that was a challenge. I graduated from the white to colored wilton fondant and I have been making my own for the last year with marshmallow and powdered sugar. It’s very easy!
