Coolest Ladybug Birthday Cake

I made this Ladybug Birthday Cake for my daughter’s 2nd birthday party. It is SUPER easy! A great beginner cake, which was perfect for me at the time!

Make this cake using 2 round cake pans, can size to your birthday party size. I believe mine were 9″ round pans. To give this cake a bit more height, I cut each cake in half and filled with frosting. I did one chocolate cake and one white cake.

I frosted the entire cake with a white “crumb coat” before doing the actual decorating layer in the appropriate color. I colored frosting an EXTREME red (don’t want pink!) for the top. Frosted it and then decorated first with a single black rope licorice going across the top, toward the front and then one down the middle essentially creating the “wings.” Then with black Reese’s peanut butter candies for the spots (can use brown M&M’s if you have peanut butter allergy concerns).

For the “face” I used a shorter piece of licorice for the “eyebrows” and then a yellow Reese’s piece with a brown M&M stuck on top (with frosting) for the eyes. Another licorice piece for the mouth.

For the bottom, I colored frosting a pale to medium green and did a heavy layer of frosting and then went back with a butter knife to make the “blades” of grass. There is probably a decorator tip out there that will do this for you, but at the time I was a cake decorating novice! I purchased white and yellow gumpaste daisies at my cake decorating store and added them to the green grass.

An easy and cute cake for a small child!
