Coolest Swimming Pool Cake

My mother in law takes a water exercise class regularly, so when they renovated the pool area and threw a party for it, she decided to model a cake after the new pool. We worked on it together, and the first thing we did was look through the “coolest cakes” archives for ideas for a Swimming Pool Cake!

She baked a vanilla cake with chocolate chips. I coated it in strawberry jam and laid the rolled out sugar dough over that. The “deck” around the pool is another layer of sugar dough. I put it on in pieces, as it is difficult to make one large shape and place it properly. I then scored it with a toothpick to make tile designs before “painting” it brown with a glaze made from powdered sugar and water and food coloring.

I spread the glaze with a rubber spatula. The water is butter cream icing in a wavy pattern. The steps are sugar dough, but the railing is candy. I actually don’t know what they are called, but I used the same candy for the “bananas” stacked up at the side of the pool.

The “barbells” are mini marshmallows. The ball is not food, its just a foam ball stuck in with a toothpick. I guess I could have used a gumball! The radio is a photograph. We think it came out fabulous! Thank you to everyone who posted your cakes before us, you were a real inspiration!
